The purpose of the National Social Studies Supervisors Association (NSSSA) is to promote interest of the social studies leaders in instruction, curriculum and materials, research, pre-and in-service training of teachers, and social action. NSSSA encourages and assists in the development of sound supervisory practices, which result in the improvement of social studies instruction. NSSSA offers its services and assistance to leaders at state and local levels in their efforts to initiate similar organizations.
Membership shall be open to those individuals who have leadership responsibilities for the social studies curriculum and instructional programs. This would include individuals with such titles as director, department head or chairperson, curriculum coordinator, consultant, principal, and others in a leadership role. Affiliation with the NSSSA is open to groups with similar purposes and goals as NSSSA. NSSSA does not encourage duplication of state or local councils within the same geographic region.
